Understanding ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects focus, attention, impulsivity, emotional regulation, and behaviour. ADHD can affect both children and adults, with symptoms often impacting education, work, relationships, and day-to-day life.

ADHD presents differently from person to person. Some individuals struggle mainly with concentration and organisation, while others experience hyperactivity, impulsive behaviour, or a combination of symptoms.
Many people spend years struggling without understanding why they find everyday responsibilities, routines, emotional regulation, or concentration more difficult than others around them. For some, ADHD can lead to frustration, low confidence, burnout, anxiety, or feeling constantly overwhelmed. Understanding ADHD is often the first step towards gaining clarity, accessing support, and improving quality of life.

I carry out every ADHD assessment as an experienced NHS Clinical Psychiatrist with more than 20 years of medical experience and over a decade of specialist ADHD assessment expertise.

My goal is to provide professional, affordable ADHD assessments that help people access fast answers, expert psychiatric insight, and appropriate treatment without years of waiting.

This is not a rushed tick-box assessment or a generic online screening service. I provide comprehensive psychiatric ADHD assessments designed to properly understand your symptoms, identify whether ADHD is present, and explore whether another mental health condition may better explain the difficulties you are experiencing.

For many patients, finally receiving professional clarity can be genuinely life-changing. With fast appointments, detailed reports delivered within 48 hours, and support with treatment and medication where appropriate, I provide a straightforward and professional route to getting answers without years of waiting.

What is ADHD?

ADHD affects the brain’s ability to regulate attention, behaviour, emotions, and executive functioning. People with ADHD may find it difficult to stay organised, focus on tasks, manage emotions, or complete responsibilities consistently.

ADHD is not caused by laziness, poor parenting, or lack of intelligence. It is a recognised medical condition that can affect both children and adults.

For many people, ADHD symptoms are not simply occasional distractions or forgetfulness.

Symptoms can affect education, careers, relationships, emotional wellbeing, confidence, and everyday functioning. Some individuals experience hyperactivity and impulsivity, while others may appear quieter but struggle internally with concentration, emotional overwhelm, forgetfulness, or disorganisation.

Affordable ADHD Assessments with Professional Clinical Care

Private healthcare can often feel financially overwhelming, especially when some ADHD clinics charge significant fees while offering limited psychiatric involvement. My goal is to make professional ADHD assessments more accessible while still maintaining high clinical standards, detailed assessments, and personalised care.

ADHD Symptoms

ADHD symptoms can vary depending on the individual and the type of ADHD they have. Some people mainly experience inattentive symptoms, while others struggle more with impulsivity and hyperactivity.

Common ADHD symptoms may include:

  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Forgetfulness
  • Restlessness
  • Impulsivity
  • Emotional overwhelm
  • Disorganisation
  • Difficulty completing tasks

Symptoms can affect school, work, relationships, emotional wellbeing, and confidence if left unsupported. Many adults with ADHD describe constantly feeling mentally exhausted from trying to stay organised, focused, or productive. Children and teenagers may struggle with school performance, emotional regulation, or behavioural difficulties without understanding why.

Types of ADHD

There are three recognised types of ADHD. Each type presents differently and can affect people in different ways. Understanding the types of ADHD is important because symptoms do not always appear the same from one person to another.

Inattentive Type ADHD

This type is mainly associated with concentration difficulties, forgetfulness, poor organisation, and becoming easily distracted.

People with inattentive ADHD may struggle to stay focused during conversations, lose track of tasks easily, or constantly feel mentally overwhelmed.

Hyperactive-Impulsive ADHD

This type is more commonly associated with impulsive behaviour, restlessness, excessive talking, and difficulty sitting still.

Children may appear highly energetic, while adults often describe an internal feeling of restlessness or racing thoughts.

Combined Type ADHD

Combined Type ADHD includes both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms and is one of the most commonly diagnosed ADHD presentations.

Individuals may experience concentration difficulties alongside impulsivity, emotional regulation difficulties, and hyperactivity.

ADHD Diagnosis Guidance

Getting an ADHD diagnosis can help individuals better understand their symptoms and access appropriate support, treatment, or medication. A proper ADHD diagnosis should involve detailed assessment and consideration of a person’s mental health history, behavioural patterns, and day-to-day functioning.
For many people, diagnosis can provide reassurance and help explain long-standing struggles that previously went misunderstood.

Don’t Wait Months for Answers, Get Clarity in Days

Want to Get Diagnosed for ADHD? ADHD assessments involve discussions around symptoms, childhood history, behaviour patterns, and mental health history. A comprehensive assessment helps ensure symptoms are properly understood and that other mental health conditions are also considered.

ADHD by Age

ADHD symptoms can change throughout life. Symptoms seen in children may present differently in teenagers and adults.

ADHD in Children

Children with ADHD may struggle with attention, hyperactivity, emotional regulation, behaviour, or following instructions at school and home. Some children appear restless and impulsive, while others may seem distracted, withdrawn, or prone to daydreaming.

ADHD in Teenagers

Teenagers with ADHD may experience difficulties with motivation, organisation, emotional regulation, schoolwork, and social relationships. As academic pressure increases, ADHD symptoms can begin affecting confidence, emotional wellbeing, and educational performance.

ADHD in Adults

Many adults are diagnosed later in life after years of struggling with concentration, organisation, burnout, or emotional overwhelm without understanding the cause. Adult ADHD can affect careers, relationships, finances, confidence, and day-to-day responsibilities.

ADHD & Misdiagnosis

ADHD symptoms can sometimes overlap with anxiety, depression, autism, trauma-related conditions, and other mental health conditions. This is why comprehensive psychiatric assessment is important. Some individuals may believe they have ADHD when another condition may better explain their symptoms, while others may have ADHD that has been overlooked for years.
Understanding ADHD is the first step towards recognising symptoms, seeking support, and accessing appropriate treatment.

My experience includes:

  • Medical Doctor within the NHS since 2005
  • More than 10 years carrying out ADHD assessments
  • 7 years working as a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist
  • Experience across multiple NHS Trusts
  • Advanced Certification in ADHD Medication
  • Management through UKAAN
  • Advanced Certification in ADHD Assessment and
  • Diagnosis through UKAAN

Conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum conditions, emotional dysregulation, trauma, and borderline personality disorder can sometimes present with symptoms that appear very similar to ADHD.

I carry out detailed psychiatric screening alongside the ADHD assessment process to ensure patients receive accurate answers, meaningful clinical insight, and appropriate recommendations.

This means that even if ADHD is not the final diagnosis, patients still leave with a clearer understanding of what may be affecting their mental health and guidance on how to move forward.
